On December 31, the Finnish police said they had seized a cargo ship suspected of damaging undersea communication cables in the Gulf of Finland, as well as 14 crew members from Russia and other countries. The Russian Embassy in Finland requested further information from the Finnish side. Finnish National Police Superintendent Ilka Koskimäki said at a press conference that the arrested ship was 132 meters long, flying the St. Vincent and the Grenadines flag, and sailed from St. Petersburg, Russia to the Israeli city of Haifa. The 14 crew members in custody are from Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan. The Finnish authorities suspected that the ship was “responsible for the damage caused to the submarine cable”.
