There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. With that in mind, we've noticed some promising trends at Empresas Copec (SNSE:COPEC) so let's look a bit deeper.
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Empresas Copec:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.06 = US$1.6b ÷ (US$31b - US$4.1b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2025).
So, Empresas Copec has an ROCE of 6.0%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Specialty Retail industry average of 13%.

We're glad to see that ROCE is heading in the right direction, even if it is still low at the moment. The data shows that returns on capital have increased substantially over the last five years to 6.0%. The company is effectively making more money per dollar of capital used, and it's worth noting that the amount of capital has increased too, by 24%. So we're very much inspired by what we're seeing at Empresas Copec thanks to its ability to profitably reinvest capital.
All in all, it's terrific to see that Empresas Copec is reaping the rewards from prior investments and is growing its capital base. Since the stock has only returned 12% to shareholders over the last five years, the promising fundamentals may not be recognized yet by investors. Given that, we'd look further into this stock in case it has more traits that could make it multiply in the long term.
