Listen to the news

Insiders who purchased AU$342.2k worth of Core Energy Minerals Ltd (ASX:CR3) shares over the past year recouped some of their losses after price gained 25% last week. However, the purchase is proving to be a costly gamble, since losses made by insiders have totalled AU$143k since the time of purchase.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Core Energy Minerals Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Non-Executive Chairman Christopher Gale bought AU$150k worth of shares at a price of AU$0.019 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being AU$0.01). Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. It is generally more encouraging if they paid above the current price, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels.

While Core Energy Minerals insiders bought shares during the last year, they didn't sell. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. By clicking on the graph below, you can see the precise details of each insider transaction!

Core Energy Minerals Insiders Bought Stock Recently

We saw some Core Energy Minerals insider buying shares in the last three months. Independent Non-Executive Director David Vilensky shelled out AU$20k for shares in that time. It's good to see the insider buying, as well as the lack of recent sellers. However, in this case the amount invested recently is quite small.

Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Core Energy Minerals insiders own about AU$800k worth of shares. That equates to 16% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
