Scientists have found a new way to fight obesity: increase cells' own heat production. This study, led by a team at the University of Technology Sydney in Australia, designed a novel experimental drug that can accurately but gently stimulate mitochondria, the “energy factory” within cells, so that they burn energy more efficiently in the form of heat rather than store it. This new fat-burning strategy offers hope for the development of safer treatments for obesity. The relevant paper was published in the latest “Chemical Science” journal.
