Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law abolishing the requirement that Russian officials and judges must publicly declare their income and assets every year. While weakening public scrutiny of the country's political elite, it also strengthens the Kremlin's control over anti-corruption investigations. According to a presidential decree issued on December 28, a number of previous anti-corruption laws have been revised. In the future, officials and judges will only be required to report on their financial situation in specific circumstances. These situations include when transferring within the government system. Starting January 1, an automated system called “Poseidon” will be responsible for monitoring officers' income, expenses, and asset status, and evaluating potential corruption risks. The system is coordinated by the President's Executive Office in the Kremlin and operated by the Federal Security Service, which is mainly responsible for the security of senior officials.
