On the 23rd, the Venezuelan National Congress unanimously passed the “Law for the Protection of Freedom of Navigation and Trade from Piracy, Blockades, and Other Illegal International Acts”. The law stipulates that anyone who incites, instigates, supports, finances or participates in the above illegal acts is punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Rodriguez, chairman of the National Congress of the Commission, announced the official entry into force of the law on the same day, and stated that the law will provide legal guarantees for safeguarding the country's freedom of navigation, trade exchanges, and sovereign rights. According to foreign media interpretation, the law was introduced mainly in response to the recent seizure and interception of oil tankers involved by the United States in the Caribbean.
