On the afternoon of December 23, local time, early this morning Beijing time, the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting at the request of Venezuela, with the support of China, Russia and other countries. Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Sun Lei, China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said that the United States continues to increase its military deployment in the Caribbean Sea and the waters off Venezuela, continuously increasing sanctions, blockades, and threats of force against Venezuela, threatening that Venezuela's territory, oil, and assets will be owned by the US, and even threatening to launch a military attack on mainland Venezuela. The actions of the US side seriously infringe on the sovereignty, security and legitimate rights and interests of other countries, seriously violate the Charter of the United Nations and international law, and threaten peace and security in Latin America and the Caribbean. Ambassador Sun Lei stressed that China opposes all acts of unilateral bullying, opposes any act that violates the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and infringes on the sovereignty and security of other countries, opposes the use or threat of use of force in international relations, interference in Venezuela's internal affairs by outside forces under any pretext, and opposes illegal unilateral sanctions and “long-arm jurisdiction” that have no basis in international law and are not authorized by the Security Council. Ambassador Sun Lei said that China calls on the US side to comply with the international community's call for justice, immediately stop relevant actions, and urge the US side to maintain the safety of navigation and freedom enjoyed by countries in the region, carry out normal law enforcement and judicial cooperation through a bilateral and multilateral legal framework, lift illegal unilateral sanctions, and do more things conducive to the peace, stability and development of Latin America and the Caribbean.
