OpenAI, Google, and Perplexity have launched an unprecedented battle for artificial intelligence users in India, launching free services. The move is thought to be aimed at collecting large amounts of multilingual training data from the most populous country in the world. Early download data showed a surge in user usage due to the launch of the free package. According to data compiled by market intelligence company Sensor Tower, as of last week, the number of daily active users of ChatGPT in India increased by 607% year-on-year to 73 million, more than double the number of users in the US. Gemini's daily active users in India have increased 15% since the Reliance Jio promotion was launched in November, reaching 17 million last week, while the number of users in the US was 3 million. Furthermore, India currently accounts for more than one-third of Perplexity's global daily active users, compared to just 7% last year. Perplexity previously offered users of the Indian telecom company Airtel a year of free use of its Pro tool, which had an annual fee of $200 worldwide.
