According to a recent survey, Americans have reported a struggle to afford holiday gifts, highlighting the economic pressure felt under the current administration of President Donald Trump.

What Happened: A poll conducted by The Associated Press–NORC Center for Public Affairs Research reveals that a significant number of US adults have experienced an increase in prices for everyday essentials such as groceries and electricity, as well as holiday gifts.

Nearly half of the participants confessed to finding it more challenging to afford gifts, leading to postponed major purchases and reduced nonessential spending.

Despite the survey’s results, President Trump continues to downplay economic concerns, encouraging families to limit their Christmas gift spending.

He has consistently labeled affordability issues as a “Democrat hoax” and accused recent polls of being “fake” and intentionally overlooking his achievements.

The survey also discovered that 68% of adults perceive the U.S. economy as “poor”, a sentiment that has remained unchanged since December 2024, before Trump’s return to office. About half of the consumers are more actively seeking the lowest prices, and approximately four in ten are utilizing their savings more frequently.

Even with the economic pressure, consumer spending has remained stable, though hopes for improvement are minimal.

The White House has recognized the economic situation, stating that economic recovery has been a driving force behind most actions taken by the Trump administration since its inception.

Why It Matters: The findings of this survey underscore the economic challenges faced by many Americans under the current administration. Despite the President’s dismissal of these issues, the reality of increased prices and reduced spending power is impacting the lives of many.

The White House’s recognition of these economic challenges indicates an understanding of the situation, but it remains to be seen how this will translate into effective policy changes to alleviate the economic strain on American citizens.
