The Japan Meteorological Agency held a press conference at noon today in response to the 6.7 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the sea east of Aomori Prefecture at 11:44 local time and the tsunami observed in various places. Shinji Kiyomoto, the Meteorological Agency's earthquake and tsunami countermeasures planning officer, appealed, “In areas where tsunami warnings have been issued, there is danger in the sea and near the coast, so please stay away from the coast. As the tide will continue to flow rapidly, please do not go down to the sea or get close to the coast until the warning is lifted.” Shinji Kiyomoto said at the press conference, “The magnitude of this earthquake was 6.7. However, the “follow-up earthquake” mentioned in the “Hokkaido-Sanriku Offshore Follow-up Earthquake Warning Information” released in the early morning of December 9 refers to large-scale earthquakes with a magnitude of 8 or higher, so this earthquake is not within that category. The public is still invited to continue to prepare well for the earthquake.” Regarding the follow-up direction of the current tsunami warning, Shinji Kiyomoto said, “The tsunami has been observed so far, but if the follow-up situation remains stable, it is expected that we can study whether to lift the tsunami warning after about 1 to 2 hours.” Shinji Kiyomoto also pointed out at the press conference, “Since the 7.5 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast east of Aomori Prefecture in the middle of the night of December 8, surrounding seismic activity has been active and the scope of activity has continued to expand. This earthquake occurred on the east side of the active area. Since December 8, earthquakes of magnitude 6 or so have occurred many times in the relevant waters, and this earthquake is one of them. As a result, the Japan Meteorological Agency believes seismic activity is still active.”
