US Trade Representative Jamison Greer said President Trump may decide to withdraw from USMCA next year, although the text of the agreement requires member states to remain at least until 2036. Greer said that the review provisions in the USMCA were designed to revise, reevaluate, or withdraw from the agreement, and the president has always insisted that only “favorable agreements” be retained. Greer also proposed the possibility of splitting the agreement into two bilateral agreements between the US, Canada, and the US and Mexico. This was discussed with Trump this week. He said that there are significant differences in the economic relationship between the US, Canada, and the US and Mexico, and that the bundling agreement between the three countries “lacks sufficient economic rationality.”
