03:02 AM EDT, 08/28/2025 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates to add Rheinmetall's statement) Rheinmetall (RHM.F) is planning to acquire German shipbuilder Naval Vessels Luerssen, or NVL, German newspaper Bild reported Wednesday, citing industry sources. The report noted that the German defense technology company's supervisory board will consider the plan in the coming weeks. A person familiar with the matter warned that a transaction is not yet guaranteed, as the Luerssen family, the owner of NVL, still needs to approve the deal. Bild noted that the family is looking to sell military shipyards in Hamburg, Wilhelmshaven, and Wolgast, all in Germany, as part of a strategy to focus on megayachts. Without providing specific details, Rheinmetall Chief Executive Officer Armin Papperger said the company has always been interested in expanding its product portfolio, Reuters reported the same day. Rheinmetall told MT Newswires it does not comment on market speculation, while NVL did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
