The Trump administration cleared barriers for Zoox, an autonomous driving subsidiary of Amazon, to test autonomous vehicles without traditional driving controls such as steering wheels. The US Department of Transportation said in a statement on Wednesday that US auto safety regulators have approved exemptions from federal vehicle safety standards for custom driverless cars manufactured by Zoox. Previously, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had repeated communication with this autonomous vehicle developer over a long period of time. Zoox introduced this driverless car without a steering wheel and brake pedals in 2022. According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, all of Zoox's autonomous vehicles operating on public roads are subject to this new exemption. It is currently unclear how many such vehicles are in operation.
