Vir Biotechnology Insiders Sell US$1.1m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution

Simply Wall St·07/07/2025 10:13:21
Listen to the news

Vir Biotechnology, Inc. (NASDAQ:VIR) shareholders may have reason to be concerned, as several insiders sold their shares over the past year. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Vir Biotechnology

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the CEO & Director, Marianne De Backer, for US$474k worth of shares, at about US$5.95 per share. So what is clear is that an insider saw fit to sell at around the current price of US$5.41. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. In this case, the big sale took place at around the current price, so it's not too bad (but it's still not a positive).

In the last year Vir Biotechnology insiders didn't buy any company stock. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Insiders own 4.4% of Vir Biotechnology shares, worth about US$33m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
