Since Israel launched attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities and military targets, Iranians have faced the risk that the US might intervene — yet when the attack actually happened, some claimed to have slept throughout the bombing. When residents of Qom city woke up, they heard the sirens of emergency vehicles blaring, while the “Basky Militia”, a volunteer armed group composed of fighters loyal to Iran's religious leaders, also increased their deployment on the streets. However, five people living in Qom said that they were surprised to learn what had happened only after they woke up early in the morning, and were unaware throughout the night. The city of Qom is about 30 kilometers from the Fordo nuclear facility that the US attacked in the early hours of Sunday morning. The US bombed the Fordo fuel enrichment plant just after 2 a.m. local time on Sunday. Like other cities in Iran, Qom City does not have an air strike warning system, so people can't get any warning before the attack. Qom is regarded as a holy city and is home to Iran's largest and most famous Shiite seminary. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei studied at Qom Theological Seminary, and many former Iranian presidents also graduated from it. Similarly, in a village about 35 km from the Natanz nuclear facility, residents said they heard no movement last night — the facility was also bombed during the night.
