Listen to the news

Viewing insider transactions for Acuity Inc.'s (NYSE:AYI ) over the last year, we see that insiders were net sellers. This means that a larger number of shares were sold by insiders in relation to shares purchased.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Acuity Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Senior VP & General Counsel, Barry Goldman, for US$907k worth of shares, at about US$305 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$243. So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it. Barry Goldman was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

Insider Ownership

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It appears that Acuity insiders own 0.3% of the company, worth about US$24m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
