LIC Housing Finance (NSE:LICHSGFIN) shareholders have earned a 22% CAGR over the last five years

The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But on a lighter note, a good company can see its share price rise well over 100%. Long term LIC Housing Finance Limited (NSE:LICHSGFIN) shareholders would be well aware of this, since the stock is up 141% in five years. In the last week the share price is up 2.1%.

With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of LIC Housing Finance, it has a TSR of 166% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

LIC Housing Finance shareholders are down 3.8% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 6.0%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 22% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering.
