First Solar stock slipped 1.4% to about US$174 in Friday trading, a muted reaction for a company that just printed one of the fattest profit lines in utility scale solar. Q3 2026 earnings landed at US$5.31 per share on roughly US$1.23b of sales, with profitability sitting at levels many manufacturers only talk about.
Short term traders see a slightly softer tape and a weak 90 day return. Long term investors are staring at a business throwing off high margins and trading on a P/E that screens low against the sector.

Earnings are one thing, but investors who care about what they are paying for the business usually anchor on cash flows. First Solar’s quarterly profit line is impressive, although the real valuation story sits in the cash the operation produces.
On First Solar's cash flows alone, the stock could be a dramatic 49% undervalued.
The bullish story around First Solar hinges on converting a tech and capacity plan into real, high quality output, not just strong margins.
"The main thing that has to go right is that First Solar converts its CuRe and perovskite technology roadmap and South Carolina capacity build-out into reliable, profitable production while managing tariff and underutilization risks in Malaysia and Vietnam."
Q3 results show progress on that roadmap. CuRe is already running in Perrysburg and is being prepared for Series 7 in India. The South Carolina plant is open and ramping toward full output by mid 2027. Perovskite receives higher R&D funding and remains on track for an Ohio pilot line in early 2027, providing this earnings report with clear milestone checks rather than just promises.

Bearish analysts argue that First Solar’s tariff and onshoring story eventually erodes earnings quality rather than protects it.
"the new securities class action lawsuits alleging that tariffs, underutilized Malaysia and Vietnam capacity, and the costs of South Carolina onshoring contributed to contract cancellations and weaker 2025 outcomes introduce the risk of future customer pushback on price adjusters and tighter contract terms that could weigh on revenue realization and earnings quality."
Q3 results partly validate those worries. Net sales fell about 23% year on year and full year guidance for volume and revenue was cut, which points to lumpier conversion of the US$13.5b backlog. At the same time, gross margin near 58% and US$571.1m of net income show no sign yet of margin damage from tariffs, legal spend, or onshoring costs.
First Solar just reminded investors that strong profitability and a muted share price can sit side by side. The real opportunity is finding stocks that could be undervalued before the market reacts to fresh information.
