Covista stock stepped back today. Shares closed at US$124.33, about 3.4% lower on the first full session after reporting Q1 2027 results. The immediate read is disappointment.

Look past the red screen and the story looks different. Revenue reached US$511.5m and adjusted earnings per share came in strong for a healthcare education provider, supported by expanding adjusted EBITDA and steady enrollment momentum. Short term traders focused on the price drop. Long term holders are weighing a business that continues to generate what they view as high quality profits against a valuation that already reflects expectations for slower forecast growth.

Investors may appreciate the quality of Covista's earnings but feel uneasy about paying a higher price given the slower forecast growth. Explore our screener of companies that combine resilient profitability with more grounded expectations through the 29 high quality undervalued stocks.

Covista bull case: enrollment engine largely delivers

The optimistic view hangs on healthcare demand and digital scale turning Covista into a compounding enrollment machine.

"Operational actions to improve marketing effectiveness and enrollment funnel conversion at Chamberlain, coupled with double digit application growth in both pre and post licensure nursing, can help re accelerate total enrollment and support revenue and earnings."

Q1 shows this thesis partly working. Total enrollment rose 7.6% and Walden hit record students with 10 straight quarters of double digit growth. Chamberlain pre licensure BSN climbed 13.2% and nursing EBITDA grew, but continuing student softness and RN to BSN weakness mean conversion is not yet firing across every program.

Bear case: execution and cash engine under the microscope

On the cautious side, skeptics worry that Covista’s enrollment engine could stumble and starve the cash returns story.

"The model depends on high cash generation to fund capacity expansion and large share repurchases, so any sustained dip in enrollment, pricing or margins across Walden, Chamberlain or Med/Vet could reduce free cash flow."

Recent numbers challenge that concern for now. Free cash flow over the last year was US$355m and net leverage stayed at 0.5x. Q1 adjusted EBITDA margin expanded to 25.6% even with higher campus and tech capex, and the company still bought back US$84m of stock, suggesting the flywheel remains intact this quarter.
