Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bagae wrote that among all countries, Canada should have understood the importance of territorial integrity and national sovereignty. Canada's own history records the US invasion during the War of 1812, the “Montreal Annexation Declaration” in 1849, and more recently Donald Trump's repeated threats to turn Canada into the 51st state of the United States. Are respecting historical and legal facts and maintaining territorial integrity actually basic principles that Canada pursues? Or are these principles important only when Canada's own sovereignty is at risk? Doesn't Canada realize that doing this would be tantamount to decriminating itself from the roots it is based on?
