What Ocado Group Holders Got Right

If you had put fresh money into Ocado Group on 1 January 2026, the story since then might look very different depending on which early narrative you trusted. For Ocado Group shareholders, the return from the start of the year was 38.6%, including dividends. At the outset, investors were weighing concerns over high implied P/E assumptions and pressure on automation demand against arguments about recurring Technology Solutions income. Which of those competing views felt more persuasive on day one?

Narratives are how investors here put a case on the record, with explicit assumptions about revenue, margins and the multiple. Those assumptions imply an estimated Fair Value.

The Two Ocado Group Stories Investors Had To Weigh

The shares cost £2.36 at the start of the period, and Ocado Group sat between two sharply different but credible stories about where the business might head next.

On the optimistic side, the bull Narrative pinned Fair Value at £3.14, 33% above the start price. Supporters leaned on assumptions such as 8.5% revenue growth and a 2.4% profit margin, tied to recurring Technology Solutions income.

The bear Narrative pointed instead to a Fair Value of £2.1, 11% below the start price. This view focused on rising sustainability regulation and higher energy and compliance costs that could erode margins over time.

What The Results Changed For The Ocado Group Argument

The clearest new fact was the H1 2026 report. Ocado Group recorded revenue of £1.037b against £674m a year earlier, with the net loss narrowing from £165.5m to £32.7m and net margin moving from a 24.6% loss to a 3.2% loss. That pattern supported the optimistic case on improving efficiency, although the continuing losses left the profitability part of the bull story unproven.

The key assumption here was that recurring Technology Solutions income could pull Ocado closer to sustainable profit. When you assess another high-multiple automation stock, check whether net margin is actually closing the gap toward positive territory or simply rising in line with top-line growth.

What Ocado Group's Run Up 39% Now Asks You To Believe

Ocado Group now trades at £3.26 from the start of the year, and the selected Narrative places its Fair Value below that level rather than above it. The gap reflects concern that the current share price leans heavily on optimistic assumptions already baked into the story.

The Narrative leans on a simple question: Can Ocado keep winning automation and licensing work at terms rich enough to cover ongoing R&D and competitive pressure as more clients weigh lower cost or in-house options?

"Overestimated international licensing and automation demand, along with rising competition, could limit Ocado's revenue growth, margin expansion, and cash generation. Persistent R&D costs and evolving market risks may constrain profitability, while competitive pressures and regulatory challenges threaten valuation and long-term growth."

How Could You Get There Earlier?

You may be late to this rally, but that does not have to mean arriving late to every opportunity. Start with companies whose prices leave room for a different view of their future. Here are three trading below our estimates.

  • Company 1 - 32% below our estimate - targets permit approvals and mine development progress to support higher copper production.
  • Company 2 - 33% below our estimate - grows fee income by launching tax-efficient retail vehicles and regional private equity strategies.
  • Company 3 - 26% below our estimate - expands defense capacity and digitalisation so large contracted backlogs convert into revenue.

That is three of the list. See every one of the 9 undervalued companies on it →
