If you had paused before buying AUTO1 Group on 23 October 2025, tempted by upbeat talk of e-commerce used car platforms and fintech upside, the past year would have looked very different. Holding AUTO1 Group over the past year would have meant a 43.0% loss, including dividends. With that result now on the table, which assumption in the bullish and bearish 2025 forecasts most clearly signaled that this kind of setback was possible?
The useful thing about a Narrative is that the reasoning is checkable: the assumptions sit beside the argument, and together they imply an estimated Fair Value you can disagree with.

The shares cost €29.4 at the start of the period, and anyone considering AUTO1 Group had to choose between two very different stories about what came next.
The bullish narrative put fair value at €35 and relied on revenue rising 15.6% a year with profit margin reaching 2.7%. It treated a future P/E of 32.0x as reasonable if merchant and consumer finance together built a powerful closed-loop ecosystem.
The bearish view set fair value at €20.59 with revenue growing 10.9% and margin at 2.1%. It focused on the risk that faster EU electric vehicle adoption could weaken internal combustion engine inventory values and increase write-down risk.
AUTO1 Group’s Q2 2026 report showed revenue of €2,432.055m and net income of €23.159m, with net margin at 1.0%. That combination supported the bullish call for higher sales and somewhat better profitability, yet the margin stayed far below the 2.7% target, so the evidence cut both ways.
The live question was margin power, not just top line growth. For another retailer, you would track net margin each year in relation to any story that assumes step change profitability, especially when a high future P/E depends on that improvement.
AUTO1 Group now trades at €17.04, with the selected Narrative arguing that its Fair Value sits above that level based on how earnings quality and cash generation might develop from here.
The core claim is that cash conversion can catch up with reported profit. A buyer today would need to believe AUTO1 can grow volumes and EBITDA while turning that into stronger free cash flow.
"The main requirement for improvement is that AUTO1 Group continues to grow Merchant and Autohero volumes and gross profit, while expanding adjusted EBITDA and improving cash conversion through its AI-enabled operations, financing products and ABS funding structures."

AUTO1 Group is trying to turn data, logistics and finance into a single engine. You might wonder where that same ambition appears at larger scale.
One global retailer has already wired together logistics automation, advertising and AI tools for corporate clients. It accepts short term margin pressure as the cost of building that system.
The same pattern shows up. Heavy spending on chips, warehouses and software holds near term profit back while infrastructure is built.
Once those rails are in place, every extra advertising dollar and cloud contract can land on a very different earnings base. Where AUTO1 fits into that wider shift remains an open question.
