What Investors Got Wrong About Kakao Before The Drop

Revenue at Kakao is higher than a year ago, yet profit and net margin have softened. Holding Kakao from the start of the year would have meant a 48.6% loss, including dividends. If you had made that call on 1 January 2026, you would have been relying on forecasts of 9.2% annual revenue growth, margin expansion to 8.2%, and a 49.9x P/E in three years. Which of those specific assumptions failed to match how the business actually evolved?

A Narrative on Simply Wall St is one investor's written case for a company, with its growth, margin and multiple assumptions spelled out. Those assumptions imply an estimated Fair Value.

If the move has made Kakao harder to judge, start where the gap is still open and scan 189 high quality undervalued stocks.

The Two Stories Kakao Investors Had To Weigh

The shares cost ₩58,100 at the start, and buying Kakao meant picking between two very different stories that still sounded reasonable on paper.

On the optimistic side, the bull Narrative put Fair Value at ₩74,250 and leaned on a 9.2% revenue growth assumption, with profit margin rising to 8.3% and a future P/E of 49.9x over three years.

The bear Narrative argued for Fair Value of ₩41,917 and focused on stricter South Korean regulation and demographic decline as threats that could restrain revenue and compress margins.

What The Results Changed For Kakao

Kakao reported Q2 2026 revenue of ₩2,098,456.1m versus ₩1,917,469.7m a year earlier, which kept the growth part of the bullish story alive. Net income slipped from ₩206,130.2m to ₩194,276.6m and net margin moved from 10.8% to 9.3%, which challenged the expected margin expansion. Overall, the evidence cut both ways.

The key assumption here was not just revenue growth but also improving profitability. For a different company, you would stress test any upbeat thesis by tracking whether net margin actually trends toward the projected level in each new set of financials.

What You Would Be Paying For In Kakao Today

Today Kakao trades at ₩31,850, after a share price that is down 48.6% from the start of the year. The selected bullish Narrative still places its Fair Value above that level, based on what it sees in Talk Biz data, AI economics, and trimmed loss-making operations.

Your question now is simple. For the fall to look like a potential opening rather than a warning, you would need to believe Kakao can turn KakaoTalk centered AI and advertising into higher margin revenue without AI infrastructure spending eroding those gains.

"The current valuation suggests that the market is focusing more on near-term execution risk in AI, advertising mix, and non-core segments rather than on the potential upside from a higher-margin, KakaoTalk-centered ecosystem."

Go Straight To The Source

This company's disappointment is already part of the story. Your next idea could come from looking where the price and the possibilities still seem far apart. Here are three companies priced below our estimates.

  • Company 1 - 46% below our estimate - converts a large mechanical and electrical project backlog into modular data centre buildouts.
  • Company 2 - 42% below our estimate - turns regulatory and AI-driven risk questions into specialized, high-margin advisory and implementation work.
  • Company 3 - 32% below our estimate - offers substantial gold reserves and long mine life alongside higher costs and political risk.

That is three of the list. See all 204 companies with the balance sheet to back it up →
