What Prosus Doubters Saw Before The Drop

If you had bought Prosus on 15 October 2025, attracted by talk of AI driven ecosystem gains and bullish analyst targets, the past year would have felt rough. Investors who held Prosus over the past year are down 38.6%, including dividends. Fresh headlines about AI tools like ToqanClaw and OLX’s expansion now sit beside that result. So what, exactly, did the original smartphone and digital payments thesis fail to factor in about Tencent reliance, regulation, and capital allocation?

On Simply Wall St, a Narrative is an investor's thesis written down: the reasoning, plus the numbers it rests on. Run those numbers and you get an estimated Fair Value.

This theme extends beyond Prosus. See which of 93 AI infrastructure stocks may still merit a closer look.

The Two Prosus Stories Investors Were Weighing

The shares cost €59.06 at the start of the period, and Prosus sat between two sharply different stories about what might happen next.

The bullish narrative put Fair Value at €70.72. It leaned on AI driven efficiencies and ecosystem integration, with analysts assuming revenue would grow 29.7% a year and that Prosus could redeploy an €11b cash pile into higher growth digital financial services across emerging markets.

The bearish view set Fair Value at €37. It focused on Tencent concentration and rising China and EU regulation, with assumptions that earnings would fall to $7.5b by 2028 and that profit margins would decline to 83.4%.

What The Prosus Evidence Actually Tested

Prosus rolled out the ToqanClaw AI platform and Zapia assistant to millions of partners, alongside an 84% rise in ecosystem adjusted EBITDA and an extra US$2b of free cash flow over three years. That outcome backed the bullish expectations for AI driven efficiency and cash generation. Goldman Sachs’ Neutral initiation and concerns around Tencent funding the buyback kept the cautious case alive, so the evidence cut both ways.

The key assumption was that AI and ecosystem tools would show up clearly in profitability and cash. For any other stock, you would track segment EBITDA and free cash flow against the AI story, not just the revenue line or headline enthusiasm.

What You Would Be Paying For In Prosus Today

Prosus now trades at €35.95, and the selected Narrative places its Fair Value above that level based on ecosystem effects and AI heavy operations rather than Tencent alone.

For the fall to look like an opportunity rather than a warning, a buyer would need confidence that ecosystem synergies, AI tools and future IPO liquidity materialise as described.

"Prosus is focusing on leveraging its ecosystem to improve the performance of its companies by sharing best practices and innovating rapidly, which could lead to better revenue and net margins as companies operate more efficiently and effectively. The company is increasingly investing in AI to improve operational efficiencies, reduce customer acquisition costs, and fight fraud, which should enhance profitability and potentially expand net margins over time."

Prosus And A Different Kind Of Cash Story

Prosus puts AI and ecosystem logic at the center of its pitch. You could look one step away from that.

Plenty of merchants and consumers still need basic tools first. They need a place to transact, pay, borrow, ship and advertise in one loop.

Another business tackles that bundle in its own region. It mixes online shopping with payments, lending, logistics and on platform marketing.

The catch is that building a loan book consumes cash before it pays back. Understanding that tradeoff might change how you read headline free cash flow.

If Prosus is about AI leverage, this other story is about funding a financial spine. The payoff, or the drag, shows up on a different timetable.
