According to new regulations published in Turkey's official gazette, Turkey has banned social media platforms from providing services to children under 15. Social media companies will be required to verify a user's age using an age verification token through the Turkish e-government system when the user creates an account. According to the new regulations, once verified that users are under 15, the platform must block their account applications. The regulation will come into effect on November 1, after the Turkish parliament passed a bill in April. Age verification for existing accounts is expected to be completed by March 31, 2027, and all accounts found to be under 15 will be closed. According to the new regulations, accounts for users aged 15 to 17 are private accounts by default, content filtering is enabled, and personalized ads or live streaming are not provided. The platform also needs to take technical measures to prevent users from taking screenshots of these accounts. The platform must also provide parental control tools for accounts of users aged 15 to 17, allowing parents to manage settings, limit usage time, and authorize paid transactions. According to Turkey's internet law, social media platforms that don't comply could face fines of up to 3% of their global revenue, advertising bans, and internet bandwidth limits.
