Nu Fell 22% And The Easy Bull Case Did Not Hold

If you backed the Nu Holdings growth story through 2026, the share price did not cooperate. For Nu shareholders, the loss from the start of the year was 21.9%, including dividends. That outcome sits awkwardly against headlines about bank charters, record profits, and accelerating customer adoption. If you had been weighing Nu on 1 January, with only the bullish 2028 growth assumptions and the bearish margin and regulation worries on record, which of those specific expectations turned out to be off the mark?

On Simply Wall St, a Narrative is an investor's thesis written down: the reasoning, plus the numbers it rests on. Run those numbers and you get an estimated Fair Value.

The Two Nu Holdings Stories Investors Had To Weigh

The shares cost US$16.74 at the start of the period, and Nu Holdings sat between two sharply different but reasonable stories about its future.

The bull Narrative put Fair Value at US$19. It leaned on rapid digital adoption in Latin America and the idea that Nu could become a multi-vertical super app, with AI-powered underwriting helping it act as a low-cost manufacturer of both unsecured and secured loans.

The bear Narrative argued for a Fair Value of US$9. It focused on expansion into riskier, underserved markets and the possibility that higher credit losses and tighter regulation would compress profitability over time.

What The Nu Holdings Results Actually Put To The Test

Nu Holdings delivered Q2 2026 revenue of US$2,474.3m and net income of US$1,060.2m, with net margin rising to 42.8%. That outcome backed the view that scale and AI underwriting could support strong profitability, even as Latin American expansion continued. At the same time, earnings misses earlier in 2026 and regulatory questions kept the cautious Narrative alive. Overall, the evidence cut both ways.

The key issue here was profitability under rapid expansion. For any fast growing bank, that claim can be evaluated by tracking net margin and absolute earnings against prior periods, then asking whether the returns still justify the additional credit and regulatory risk being taken on.

What Nu Holdings' 22% Slide Asks You To Believe Today

Nu Holdings now trades at US$13.29, below where the year began, while the selected bullish narrative still places its fair value above the current price rather than at or under it.

That view relies on Nu turning product love and ultra-low servicing costs into durable earnings power. A buyer today must believe that this model still scales even as regulation tightens.
