Rio Tinto Commissions Carbon Capture Trial Facility with Shougang Group in China

11:58 PM EDT, 09/27/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Rio Tinto Group (RIO.L) commissioned its jointly owned industrial-scale carbon capture trial facility in China with steel producer Shougang Group, according to a Monday release. Designed for blast furnace gas from ironmaking, the facility was integrated into Shougang's ironmaking production system and will be used primarily for trial and research. It has an annual capacity of up to 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide. The mining company collaborated with Shougang on the project through a memorandum of understanding signed in 2022, which includes a phased technology development program for the partnership.
