Lean hog futures closed mixed on Wednesday, with contracts down 40 cents to 30 cents higher on the session. USDA’s national base hog price was reported at $82.60 on Wednesday afternoon, down $1.98 from the day prior. The CME Lean Hog Index was down another 61 cents on September 14 at $86.60.
USDA’s pork carcass cutout value was back down $1.15 in the Wednesday PM report, at $86.35. The loin and picnic were the only primals reported higher. Federally inspected hog slaughter for Wednesday was estimated at 488,000 head, taking the weekly total to 1.458 million head. That was 8,906 head below the same week last year.
