On the 15th local time, the World Trade Organization released the “2026 World Trade Report”, which proposed three scenarios for the future of the global trade system. One scenario is to strengthen the multilateral framework: compared to the benchmark scenario, global GDP is expected to grow by 2.9% by 2050, and global exports are expected to grow by 17.9%. The scenario envisions a world where WTO rules are strengthened by expanding commitments to open markets, establishing new multilateral norms in digital trade and services, expanding membership, and building a balanced framework that can maintain trade openness while taking security concerns into account. “Over the past 80 years, the multilateral trading system has brought tremendous benefits, helping to build a more integrated and resilient global economy.” WTO Director General Ivira said, “The data shows that about 72% of global trade in goods is still carried out under the WTO's 'most-favoured-nation treatment' principle; at the same time, WTO-led trade cooperation has strongly promoted economic growth, narrowed the income gap between developing and developed economies, and promoted peace among members.”
