Some Dell Technologies Inc. (NYSE:DELL) shareholders may be a little concerned to see that the Director, Egon Durban, recently sold a substantial US$20m worth of stock at a price of US$521 per share. However, that sale only accounted for 2.6% of their holding, so arguably it doesn't say much about their conviction.

Dell Technologies Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Chairman & CEO, Michael Dell, for US$1.0b worth of shares, at about US$160 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$567. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. It is worth noting that this sale was only 26% of Michael Dell's holding.

In the last year Dell Technologies insiders didn't buy any company stock. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. If you click on the chart, you can see all the individual transactions, including the share price, individual, and the date!

Insider Ownership Of Dell Technologies

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It's great to see that Dell Technologies insiders own 47% of the company, worth about US$170b. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
