Intrum earnings trigger fresh focus on profitability

Intrum (OM:INTRUM) is back in focus after reporting weaker second quarter and first half 2026 results, with lower revenue, reduced quarterly profit and a move from profit to loss over six months.

For the second quarter to June 30, 2026, Intrum reported revenue of SEK 4,053 million compared with SEK 4,206 million a year earlier. Net income for the quarter was SEK 178 million, down from SEK 324 million in the prior year period.

Basic and diluted earnings per share from continuing operations were SEK 1.32, compared with SEK 2.69 a year ago. These figures give investors a clear snapshot of how profit generation has evolved on a per share basis through the recent quarter.

The picture over the first half of 2026 is different. Revenue for the six months was SEK 7,807 million compared with SEK 8,482 million a year ago, while Intrum reported a net loss of SEK 193 million compared with net income of SEK 425 million in the prior year period.

Basic and diluted loss per share from continuing operations for the six months was SEK 1.43, compared with basic and diluted earnings per share of SEK 3.52 a year earlier. That shift from profit to loss is central to how the latest earnings results frame the current Intrum investment story.

Intrum shares have been extremely volatile over the past year, with the latest close at SEK 3.898 and a 30 day share price return of 18.12% following the weaker half year results. However, the 90 day share price return has fallen 75.17% and the 1 year total shareholder return is down 60.09%, pointing to recent momentum but a still pressured longer term performance.

Intrum now splits opinion. Some see a beaten down recovery story after the sharp share price fall, while others focus on the recent move into loss. Which case do the current valuation signals support next?

Most Popular Narrative: 28.7% Undervalued

Intrum's most followed narrative puts fair value at SEK 5.47 compared with the last close at SEK 3.90, which frames the latest earnings setback very differently from the recent share price slide.

Resumed organic growth in servicing after several flat quarters, combined with an expanding SEK 1.8 billion pipeline and higher-margin new contracts, is expected to gradually accelerate fee income and support top line growth.

Disciplined but rising investment volumes in the portfolio business, underpinned by performance above original collection curves and strong IRRs, can stabilize the shrinking book and eventually return investing income and cash EBITDA to growth.

Read the complete narrative.

The story behind that SEK 5.47 fair value hinges on how quickly Intrum can convert its servicing pipeline and portfolio investments into higher margins and a very different earnings profile. The narrative leans heavily on a shift from loss making today to a materially profitable business later, with revenue trends, margin repair and the chosen discount rate all pulling in the same direction.

Result: Fair Value of SEK 5.47 (UNDERVALUED)

Have a read of the narrative in full and understand what's behind the forecasts.

However, Intrum's high net debt of just below SEK 45b and shrinking SEK 22.5b investing portfolio mean that slower deleveraging or weaker portfolio activity could quickly challenge this recovery narrative.

Another view on Intrum's valuation

The earlier narrative leans heavily on future earnings and a DCF style fair value of SEK 5.47. On current numbers, Intrum trades on a P/S of 0.8x compared with 0.6x for the European Commercial Services industry, a 0.9x peer average and a 1.2x fair ratio. Is that discount to fair value enough to offset the industry premium?

On this view, Intrum carries some valuation risk if the market keeps aligning more closely with industry and peer multiples. Even though the current P/S still sits below the fair ratio, the market could move towards that level over time. How much weight do you put on today’s multiples versus the long term cash flow story next?
