Twin Disc shares slipped 4.3% to US$23.41 into the close, even though the company just posted a record quarter in a heavy industrial niche where earnings power usually moves slowly. The headline is simple. Revenue reached US$114.4m in Q4 with solid profitability, and trailing 12‑month earnings now support a P/E of about 12.5x in a sector where peers trade on much richer multiples.
The short term looks jittery after the selloff. The longer term now hinges on whether this improved earnings base and growing defense exposure can justify the current valuation against cautious multi‑year forecasts.

The upbeat narrative around Twin Disc is that defense programs, hybrid propulsion and acquisitions like Katsa and Kobelt can lift margins and cash generation while adding more recurring revenue. Q4 results give that story some real support. Revenue reached US$114.4m with organic growth of 15.9%, helped by defense related marine and land based transmissions and by the acquired product lines. Backlog tied to defense is 17% and up sharply year on year, and a new Finland facility plus added shifts in Racine indicate intent to support this pipeline. Profit metrics also moved in the right direction as ME&A dropped to 19.4% of sales and EBITDA reached US$11.1m with free cash flow of US$17.2m. The planned FY2027 capex and increased dividend show confidence, although the 26.3% gross margin still sits below the 30% long term target.
Bears worry that Twin Disc leans on acquisitions, faces margin pressure and remains exposed to cyclical end markets like oil and gas. Parts of Q4 validate that caution. Gross margin was 26.3%, down roughly 600 bps from a year ago, with mix and tariffs doing damage. Management still talks about 30% margin by 2030, yet the current level leaves limited room for further mix or cost headwinds. The quarter also benefited from tax items, including a US$14m annual tax benefit from the move to FIFO accounting, so net income overstates underlying power. Oil and gas e frac revenue is just over 10% of Q4 sales, which can cut both ways if that segment turns. The record backlog and low net leverage near 0.5x soften the downside case, but do not remove concern about ongoing integration work and the need to keep executing on cost control.
After margin strain, tax benefits and e frac cyclicality, Twin Disc risk still looks underappreciated.
