As a typical yurt area in the Mongolian capital, residents in the Qingeltai district live scattered, have no centralized heating networks, and have long relied on open burning of raw coal for heating. In order to explore a new model of clean energy transformation in the yurt region, in 2024, the United Nations Development Programme Representative Office in Mongolia launched a pilot project to provide 69 households in the Yurt district of Ulaanbaatar with a solar photovoltaic system equipped with battery energy storage and heat storage electric heaters. The system also incorporates an artificial intelligence driver module to monitor carbon emission reduction and convert it into carbon credit. Based on this, in September 2025, the “Using Solar Photovoltaic Systems to Transform Ulaanbaatar Yurt Zone” project supported by the Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund founded by China was implemented in the Qinggeltai District of Ulaanbaatar. It is planned to cover 500 households to achieve a clean energy transition.
