Tensions between Turkey and Israel are heating up. Earlier, there were reports that Israel launched an air strike on a deactivated air base in northern Syria, and a Turkish delegation just visited recently. Syrian state media first attributed Tuesday's attack on the Abdul Khul military airport to Israel, and the US later said it had confirmed that Israel was responsible. According to the Syrian state-run Ekhbariya TV station, there were no casualties in the attack. Turkish media reported that just a few hours before the attack, a Turkish delegation visited the base in Idlib province. Agence France-Presse quoted an unnamed security source as saying that the facility has been suspended since 2012. Relations between Turkey and Israel deteriorated in 2024 due to the war in Gaza, and Ankara then completely interrupted relations with Israel. Later that same year, after the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime, both countries tried to expand their influence in Syria. A Syrian government spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Wednesday. The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on Tuesday denouncing the Israeli attack as “an act of aggression without justification and a dangerous escalation threatening regional security and stability.”
