Hong Leong Investment Bank economists Felicia Ling and Chong Lih Herng said in a report that Malaysia's economy may have grown by 5.9% in the second quarter, slightly higher than the preliminary estimate of 5.8%. They said that the expected output from manufacturing and mining, as well as the expansion of services and construction, will support economic growth. They added that the manufacturing momentum was driven by strong electronics production and global semiconductor demand, while growth in the mining industry was supported by natural gas output. Hong Leong expects economic growth to slow by the end of the second half of the year due to the high base effect, although strong external demand for electronic products and resilient domestic demand should continue to support the Malaysian economy.
