TMX Group stock came into this earnings print with a mixed scorecard. The shares closed at CA$51.24, up about 10% over the past month but down roughly 8% over the past quarter. The headline from the release is clear. TMX delivered solid top line progress in Q2 with revenue of CA$487.5m and a healthy trailing net profit margin of 32.6%, yet the quarterly basic earnings per share of CA$0.52 sits well below Q1.

Bulls argue TMX Group is turning into a higher margin, recurring revenue platform with a broader global footprint. Q2 gives hard evidence that this mix shift is progressing. Global Insights revenue rose 18% and TMX VettaFi revenue moved higher by CA$40m, with indexed assets around US$90b. Trayport reported recurring annualized revenue of CA$293.5m, even though one off revenue was lower. Derivatives trading and clearing revenue increased 23% with volumes up 18% and record open interest, which supports the case that fee mix is moving toward derivatives and clearing. Capital formation revenue for H1 was up 20% with 251 new listings, which lines up with the ETF and IPO narrative. The pending RAFI Indices and MEMX Group deals, plus Cboe transactions, also align directly with the globalization and data income thesis, although they are not yet reflected in earnings.
Bears worry TMX is too exposed to Canadian equities, rising costs and tougher global competition. Q2 cuts both ways. Equities and fixed income trading and clearing revenue rose 13% and equities volumes increased 32% across venues, yet combined market share for TSX and TSX Venture issues slipped by about 3 points to roughly 59%. That validates some competitive pressure even in a healthy volume period. On costs, operating expenses increased 13% and about 10% on a comparable basis, reflecting staff, incentives and technology spending, which supports concerns about margin pressure from modernization and acquisitions. At the same time, double digit revenue growth across all segments and a higher trailing net margin of 32.6% show that profitability is still holding up against those costs, so the margin erosion argument is not fully playing out yet.
With TMX Group trading at a premium P/E and above a DCF estimate, investors often underestimate how liquidity, leverage and cash generation interact with that valuation.
