Rivian (RIVN) Stock Grapples With R2 Costs And Dilution Risk

Rivian Automotive went into this earnings print as the high conviction electric vehicle growth story that many investors saw as beaten up but still expensive. The stock had already slipped over the past month and then dropped about 10% on the first trading day after results, as the headlines around another quarterly loss and fresh equity funding hit sentiment.

The real story in this quarter sits in the margin squeeze. Rivian posted US$1.66b in revenue, yet still reported a net loss of US$833m as early R2 ramp costs bit into profitability. Cash of about US$5.3b plus the July equity raise gives Rivian more room to execute, but also keeps valuation and dilution concerns firmly in focus.

Is Rivian Automotive a rare high growth bargain at a 71.6% DCF discount, or just an expensive stock on a 3.7x P/S multiple with heavy losses still in play? Compare that story against the valuation analysis for Rivian Automotive.

Rivian bullish case hinges on execution milestones

The bullish story on Rivian Automotive is that R2 scale, software and partnerships can turn strong growth into a path toward profitability faster than many expect. This quarter offers some early proof points. R2 is out of the slideware phase. External deliveries began in June and Rivian hosted about 57,000 demo drives, which shows real customer engagement rather than just reservations. Production at Normal beat guidance with 12,613 units produced and 12,194 delivered, and full year deliveries were lifted to 65,000 to 70,000.

On margins, the company moved to an 11% consolidated gross margin and cut the automotive gross loss to US$36m, even while absorbing about US$100m of early R2 ramp cost. Software and Services revenue reached US$515m, with about 60% tied to the Volkswagen joint venture. That supports the claim that Rivian’s software and partner ecosystem are starting to matter in the financials, not just in presentations.

Rivian bears get fresh fuel from margin and cash burn

The bearish view on Rivian Automotive is that rising costs, underutilised plants and heavy cash burn will keep the company dependent on fresh capital. This quarter does not knock that concern out. Rivian delivered 12,194 vehicles and reached an 11% consolidated gross margin, yet the automotive segment still posted a gross loss of US$36m and an adjusted EBITDA loss of US$379m. Management flagged raw material, memory and logistics inflation, as well as about US$100m of early R2 ramp cost, which keeps the cost base under pressure rather than clearly moving past it.

Cash burn also remains central to the bear case. Rivian finished the quarter with about US$5.3b of cash, then raised roughly US$1.3b more equity in July after earlier offerings. That sequence validates fears that the business still relies on equity funding to pursue capacity and autonomy ambitions, with dilution risk very much alive.
