On Tuesday, FIFA, a non-profit organization headquartered in Switzerland, announced a major plan: it plans to divest the commercial interests of its top tournaments, establish a private company, and sell about 20% of the shares to investors. The company is valued at $20 billion. But as of Thursday alone, opposition was raging. After the European soccer governing body held an emergency meeting, several European countries announced a boycott of all FIFA events, including the World Cup. UEFA stated after the meeting: “This model should not have appeared in world football. The future of soccer cannot be shaped by capital demands whose primary goal is to maximize profits... Based on today's discussions, as long as the above plan has not been lifted, all UEFA national teams will no longer participate in any FIFA events.” FIFA argues that this is the most efficient way to raise funds. The funds raised will be distributed to 211 member associations, and promised to provide each association with an additional funding of up to 40 million dollars over the next four years. For FIFA President Gianni Infantino, this move is also an opportunity to get closer to the Trump campaign. The proposed lead investor is Joshua Kushner's Prosperity Capital. Joshua Kushner is Jared Kushner's younger brother, and Jared Kushner is Trump's son-in-law and a senior adviser to the former president.
