While Genscript Biotech Corporation (HKG:1548) shareholders have enjoyed a good week with stock up 20%, they need remain vigilant. Although prices were relatively low, insiders chose to sell US$5.8m worth of stock in the past 12 months. This could be a sign of impending weakness.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Genscript Biotech

The CEO & COO, Weihui Shao, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for HK$3.8m worth of shares at a price of HK$12.12 each. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of HK$16.82, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. This single sale was just 17% of Weihui Shao's stake.
