Zooming In On Eveready Industries India's Earnings

In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.

As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.

Over the twelve months to March 2026, Eveready Industries India recorded an accrual ratio of 0.24. Unfortunately, that means its free cash flow fell significantly short of its reported profits. In the last twelve months it actually had negative free cash flow, with an outflow of ₹115m despite its profit of ₹1.72b, mentioned above. We saw that FCF was ₹332m a year ago though, so Eveready Industries India has at least been able to generate positive FCF in the past. However, that's not all there is to consider. The accrual ratio is reflecting the impact of unusual items on statutory profit, at least in part.

The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit

Given the accrual ratio, it's not overly surprising that Eveready Industries India's profit was boosted by unusual items worth ₹482m in the last twelve months. While we like to see profit increases, we tend to be a little more cautious when unusual items have made a big contribution. When we crunched the numbers on thousands of publicly listed companies, we found that a boost from unusual items in a given year is often not repeated the next year. And that's as you'd expect, given these boosts are described as 'unusual'. We can see that Eveready Industries India's positive unusual items were quite significant relative to its profit in the year to March 2026. All else being equal, this would likely have the effect of making the statutory profit a poor guide to underlying earnings power.

Our Take On Eveready Industries India's Profit Performance

Eveready Industries India had a weak accrual ratio, but its profit did receive a boost from unusual items. Considering all this we'd argue Eveready Industries India's profits probably give an overly generous impression of its sustainable level of profitability.
