Economists at Kenanga Investment Bank said in a report that Malaysia's economic outlook is not expected to change significantly if the proposed US Section 301 tariffs are implemented. They said that the new 10% tariff would replace rather than superimpose the temporary tariff implemented under section 122, actually keeping the overall tariff burden at a similar level. The economists added that if Malaysia remains at a lower tariff level compared to its regional peers, the country can maintain a relative trade advantage. Investors are expected to focus on the final product exemption list and whether the planned 10% tariff on Malaysia will be maintained after the US has completed its evaluation, they wrote.
