New York Mayor Mamdani said that discussions are ongoing with relevant departments of the city government on whether the New York side has the right to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu if he goes to New York in September this year to attend the United Nations General Assembly. In an interview with the “New York Times” published on July 18, local time, Mamdani once again reiterated his view that Netanyahu, whose arrest warrant has been issued by the International Criminal Court on suspicion of committing “crimes against humanity and war crimes” in the Gaza Strip, should take responsibility for the actions of the Israeli military in Gaza. “I think Prime Minister Netanyahu should be sent to The Hague for trial. He is a war criminal indicted by the International Criminal Court.” Mamdani said. However, Mamdani admitted that he is unsure whether he has the right to direct the NYPD to detain foreign leaders, so he is in discussions with city government lawyers. “We will do what New York City law allows me to do.” The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant against Netanyahu in 2024, charging him with “crimes against humanity and war crimes from October 8, 2023 to at least May 20, 2024.” While running for mayor of New York, Mamdani attracted much attention for publicly supporting Palestine. He previously said that if Netanyahu visits New York, he will push for his arrest. When asked about Mamdani's remarks, Netanyahu responded that he thought Mamdani “secretly hates America.”
