South Korea's financial regulator said on Wednesday that it plans to expand the size of the National Growth Fund, a giant investment fund aimed at supporting key industries, to 200 trillion won within the next five years to ensure South Korea's competitiveness in advanced fields. The Korea Financial Services Commission announced the plan when reporting policy to President Lee Jae-myung. Korea's National Growth Fund was launched at the end of last year to support strategic high-tech industries including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and renewable energy. The initial plan was to raise up to 150 trillion won from the public and private sectors and operate the fund for five years. The Korea Financial Services Commission said it is now planning to increase the size of the fund by 50 trillion won and expand the scope of benefits to companies in emerging strategic industries such as aerospace. The Korea Financial Services Commission added that this would increase the annual investment amount to over 40 trillion won.
