On July 13, local time, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers shot and killed a 26-year-old Colombian man during an operation to crack down on “irregular immigrants” in Maine. This is the second time in a week that agency personnel have killed a foreign immigrant in such an operation, sparking protests. A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson to ICE said that law enforcement officials were preparing to arrest and deport an illegal immigrant at the time. “When another illegal alien left his home in a car, ICE personnel tried to intercept the car. The car attempted to escape. Law enforcement officers shot because of public safety concerns.” But the spokesperson did not explain what kind of “public safety threat” the dead might have posed. The Maine Attorney General's Office said that according to “preliminary statements,” the man “attempted to flee in the direction of a law enforcement officer” while ICE personnel were enforcing the law and was immediately shot dead. According to the Immigrant Rights Organization, this Colombian man was allowed to work in the US during his lifetime. An eyewitness at the scene claimed to have clearly heard the victim say “I want to stop.” According to statistics, since the US federal government stepped up enforcement actions against immigrants last year, at least 9 people have died in such enforcement actions.
