The population of about a quarter of Japan's municipalities in 2025 decreased by more than 10% compared to 2020, with the biggest drop of 34%. Japan's Kyodo News Agency compared the 2025 Japan Census results with 2020 data to analyze population changes in 1892 municipalities. The results showed that the population of 477 municipalities decreased by more than 10%, nearly double that of 247 between 2015 and 2020. In the northeastern part of Japan, Iwate Prefecture, Akita Prefecture, and Kochi Prefecture in the west, more than half of the municipalities experienced drastic population contractions.
