Spirit Aviation Holdings is requesting approval from a US bankruptcy judge in New York to approve bid procedures for the auction and potential sale of 20 Airbus A320/A321AIR.PA aircraft, according to a court filing on Wednesday. In August 2025, Spirit Airlines filed for bankruptcy for the second time in a year and stated that the sale of aircraft was essential to reduce its fleet size and match its redesigned commercial and network plans. The ultra-low-cost airline claims that the sale of the aircraft will reduce maintenance, storage and flight costs, and that the proceeds from the sale will be used to repay aircraft-related debts. The first bidder was air asset management company CSDS Asset Management, which has agreed to buy these 20 aircraft for approximately $533.5 million. According to an agreement with CSDS, Spirit will solicit bidders at a starting price of approximately $554 million if the court approves it. The company will hold an auction in April.
