Insiders who bought AU$254.5k worth of Chilwa Minerals Limited's (ASX:CHW) stock at an average buy price of AU$0.87 over the last year may be disappointed by the recent 16% decrease in the stock. Insiders invest with the hopes of seeing their money grow in value over time. However, as a result of recent losses, their initial investment is now only worth AU$223.1k, which is not what they expected.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Chilwa Minerals Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Independent Non-Executive Director Manuel António da Fonseca da Mota made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for AU$100k worth of shares at a price of AU$0.86 each. That means that even when the share price was higher than AU$0.76 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when insiders have purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price.

Chilwa Minerals insiders may have bought shares in the last year, but they didn't sell any. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. Chilwa Minerals Insiders Bought Stock Recently

There was some insider buying at Chilwa Minerals over the last quarter. Insiders purchased AU$50k worth of shares in that period. It's great to see that insiders are only buying, not selling. But in this case the amount purchased means the recent transaction may not be very meaningful on its own.

Insider Ownership

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. From our data, it seems that Chilwa Minerals insiders own 14% of the company, worth about AU$10.0m. But they may have an indirect interest through a corporate structure that we haven't picked up on. Overall, this level of ownership isn't that impressive, but it's certainly better than nothing!

What Might The Insider Transactions At Chilwa Minerals Tell Us?

Our data shows a little insider buying, but no selling, in the last three months. The net investment is not enough to encourage us much. On a brighter note, the transactions over the last year are encouraging. We'd like to see bigger individual holdings. However, we don't see anything to make us think Chilwa Minerals insiders are doubting the company. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. Every company has risks, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Chilwa Minerals (of which 2 are significant!) you should know about.
