US President Trump recently insisted that the US should control Greenland, which caused confusion and surprise on Capitol Hill. Some Republicans warned that the idea of seizing the island was too dangerous and should not even be considered. Following the US action against Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela, Trump revisited this idea during an exchange with reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday evening. He argued that US national security requires the US to place this Arctic territory under US control; this territory is part of Denmark and has an important US military facility. Some Republicans, who largely cheered for Venezuela's action, said it was inappropriate to talk about taking over Greenland. “Threats of force surrounding the annexation of Greenland are needlessly dangerous,” Utah Republican Representative Blake Moore and Maryland Democratic Representative Stany Hoyer said in a joint statement. The two co-chairs of the bipartisan group of members of the Friends of Denmark in Parliament said that Denmark is an ally in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and one of America's closest partners, and that the attack on Greenland “will unfortunately become an attack on NATO.”
