Looking at CMC Markets Plc's (LON:CMCX ) insider transactions over the last year, we can see that insiders were net sellers. That is, there were more number of shares sold by insiders than there were purchased.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At CMC Markets

The Global Head of Strategic Partnerships, David Fineberg, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for UK£426k worth of shares at a price of UK£2.32 each. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of UK£3.12. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. This single sale was just 33% of David Fineberg's stake. The only individual insider seller over the last year was David Fineberg.

David Fineberg divested 300.00k shares over the last 12 months at an average price of UK£2.33. Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. CMC Markets insiders own about UK£545m worth of shares (which is 64% of the company). I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At CMC Markets Tell Us?

There haven't been any insider transactions in the last three months -- that doesn't mean much. It's heartening that insiders own plenty of stock, but we'd like to see more insider buying, since the last year of CMC Markets insider transactions don't fill us with confidence. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing.
