Buying shares in the best businesses can build meaningful wealth for you and your family. While the best companies are hard to find, but they can generate massive returns over long periods. Don't believe it? Then look at the UACJ Corporation (TSE:5741) share price. It's 336% higher than it was five years ago. This just goes to show the value creation that some businesses can achieve. It's also good to see the share price up 33% over the last quarter.
Let's take a look at the underlying fundamentals over the longer term, and see if they've been consistent with shareholders returns.
To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Over half a decade, UACJ managed to grow its earnings per share at 121% a year. This EPS growth is higher than the 34% average annual increase in the share price. Therefore, it seems the market has become relatively pessimistic about the company.

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of UACJ, it has a TSR of 399% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
It's nice to see that UACJ shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 73% over the last year. And that does include the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 38% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand UACJ better, we need to consider many other factors.
